Green Things

We are living amongst spiders! First we found a brown recluse in our back bedroom, then I was mowing the back yard the other day and I could actually see them crawling around in the grass and up the cellar, and then Jimmy was up in the attic and said they were everywhere! I was not fond of the idea of spraying our yard and house with poison and letting my children basically play in it so I googled "natural spider control."

Here is the recipe I found for an outdoor spray:
Put one pouch of chewing or pipe tobacco in a gallon of boiling water. Let it cool and then strain out all of the tobacco. Mix one cup of the tobacco water with half a cup of natural lemon dish soap. Use a garden hose sprayer to spray around the outside of your house.

Jimmy bought the empty sprayer and we filled it with our own stuff.
Jimmy wishing I would stop taking pictures of him : )

For indoor spider control you can use lemon pledge on all your baseboards and window sills because spiders hate lemon. I like to go a little more natural than that since some furniture polishes contain phenol, a toxic crystalline acidic compound used by the Nazis to execute prisoners, yikes! I will be mixing olive oil and lemon essential oil to wipe on all the wood inside my house.

Hopefully this will run off all of our little spider friends. I need them in my garden more than my house : )

  1. Wow- thanks for posting this! I'm expecting any day now and we've had a sudden influx of spiders in our 60 YO house.
