“Any child who can spend an hour or two a day, or more if he wants, with adults that he likes, who are interested in the world and like to talk about it, will on most days learn far more from their talk than he would learn in a week of school.” ~ John Holt
This quote is SO true! Like I've said before, somedays I feel like we haven't been doing enough "educational" stuff. Then I have a moment like in the car today when Jude was talking about how his white blood cells had repaired his eye which he had gotten something in earlier, and I think to myself, wow how many five year olds know that your white blood cells are responsible for healing your body? And the great part is that he didn't learn this from sitting at a desk for a week memorizing facts about white blood cells. I'm sure he learned this in about five minutes one day when we were probably talking about something gross like why his bike wreck wounds excrete clear liquid stuff. We always take opportunities like this to help him learn about life and the world around him. So yes, he learns more from talking with us for an hour or two a day than he could ever learn in a week of school.
excellent quote...so true, so true...
ReplyDeleteThe best move I made was teaching my kids at home. The youngest is about to enter his last year of college. They have done well.
ReplyDeleteThe quote I loved was from Plato: “Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.”
I love the "genius of each" because it is so true that each one is gifted in his or her own way.
