Ruffled fabric necklace

I keep seeing these around on craft blogs and Etsy shops and I think they are SO cute! Here is a quick tutorial on how to make them and guess what, NO sewing machine required!

Cut a piece of 4x12 inch fabric. I chose a vintage fabric that an older women had given to my mom in a bag of fabric scraps. I love it!

Fold the cut piece in half lengthwise and press.

Thread a needle and tie a knot in the end of the thread. About a half an inch from the pressed edge, come up from underneath the top layer of fabric with your needle. This will hide your knot. It's important  to leave plenty of room from your folded edge and where you stitch so that you can easily slid your chain in. (Please excuse how terrible my hand looks in this picture! I work at our dairy farm so they are always dry and cracked plus I had just peeled oranges for my kids so the peeling is still in my nails!)

Do a running stich all the way down the length of the fabric. I'm terrible at hand stitching but the good news is you won't see it in the finished product!

Once you're finished stitching, leave your needle and thread hanging and don't tie any knots yet. Hold up you piece of fabric up and slide your chain through between the stitching and the pressed edge. If you have trouble getting your chain through you can attach a safety pin to the end of your chain and pull it through that way.

The next step, which I forgot to take a picture of because I was so excited to see the finished product, is to pull on the thread that is hanging out of end of you fabric. This will cinch up your sewn seam creating the ruffle. When you get it just right, tie a knot with your thread between the two layers of fabric, trim off the excess thread and you're done!
